I know it’s exciting when you see a public wifi and your head goes like “oh let me save a few bucks on data” who wouldn’t want to save money? Public wifi might be free but can cost you more than you think. Here are some of the reasons why you shouldn’t be excited of the public wifi;
1. It’s easier for attackers to eavesdrop your activities. I would like to call these “invisible men in the middle”. In your head it is only you exchanging data with websites or apps you are visiting while not knowing the invisible men are able to see your online activity. There are so many tools out there one can use to eavesdrop on you.
2. It’s easier for people to trick you that you are connected to a WiFi of a certain place you are visiting e.g. a hotel or restaurant by naming the wifi similar to the name of the place. When connected to it, the malicious people can be able to see your online activities and even get your sensitive information.
Free is not always FREE so just be safe and never trust a public wifi with your sensitive information.
