As Human beings we easily trust until we get hurt. So what does this have to do with Social engineering? Social engineering is basically using psychological manipulation tricks to make people do something or reveal some information. It basically rely on your trust.
Let me give you an example for you to relate. Have you ever been approached by someone on Social Media telling you to invest in bitcoin or any cryptocurrency by creating an account with them and get millions of profits within months? Usually it’s a beautiful lady if it’s a guy’s account or handsome guy if it’s a lady’s account. Some easily fall for it and get duped of their cash or personal details.Yap, that’s just an example of social engineering. Another good example is a strange number calling you by your name and claiming to be from your bank or telco. By just hearing your bank or telco’s name, your trust levels increases and you start sharing sensitive information like your pin number, etc. The next thing you know you are duped.
Social engineering attacks are now more common with the increase in internet accessibility and the rise of social media. Millions and millions of people have been tricked in this era leading them to lose money, sensitive information, ownership of pages/sites, etc. Stay safe, don’t share sensitivity information or click on strange links.
